This month I attended the African Pet Health Summit with the world famous Raw Pet Medics, as a sponsor and exhibitor.
Firstly, it was so amazing to spend three whole days listening to these guys speak such absolute truths. And they spoke my language, guys! Pure Biochemistry. I went home inspired and a convert to raw feeding.
Raw feeding is slowly but surely gaining significant popularity among pet owners. This dietary approach involves feeding pets uncooked animal products, similar to the natural diets of their wild ancestors. Many pet owners question, “Is raw feeding safe for dogs?” and consult various resources, trying to understand its implications. In the process, they probably come up against various sites promoting absolute untruths and misinformation.
In this article, I want to address these concerns with my new found knowledge.
Understanding raw feeding
What is raw feeding?
Raw feeding involves offering pets uncooked animal products like meat, bones, and organ meats, sometimes including supplements and pet-safe fruits and vegetables. This method attempts to mimic the natural diet of wild ancestors, focusing on biologically appropriate nutrition rather than highly processed commercial diets. This approach is growing as more pet owners seek ways to align their pets’ food with evolutionary dietary needs.
Why raw feeding is important
Recent studies show the benefits of raw diets, such as reducing health issues like obesity and allergies. Raw feeding supports efficient digestion and can improve stool quality, providing firm stools and enhanced gut microbiota diversity. Moreover, anecdotal evidence suggests shinier coats, better skin conditions, and higher energy levels in pets on raw diets. Raw feeding offers a natural pet care choice, increasingly popular among holistic approaches in regions like Europe and North America.
How to start raw feeding for your pet
Step-by-step guide
- Consult a vet: Before making any dietary changes, talk to a veterinarian. They can offer advice based on your pet’s health and needs.
- Pick high-quality proteins: Start with easily digestible meats like turkey or chicken, easing your pet into the transition.
- Create schedules: Gradually mix small amounts of raw food with your pet’s current diet over a 7-day period, increasing the proportion of raw food slowly.
- Ensure balanced nutrition: Make sure meals are complete, incorporating 70–80% raw meat, 10% organ meat, and 10% raw meaty bones, alongside fruits and vegetables. This sounds like a mission, but there are companies who assemble ready to use complete meals.
Importance of a gradual transition
Transitioning gradually to raw feeding helps avoid digestive issues. Monitor your pet’s digestion and stool quality throughout this process, making adjustments as necessary for sensitive pets. Smaller, more frequent meals during the transition can also aid digestion.
Benefits of raw feeding vs. kibble
Nutritional advantages
Raw feeding offers higher nutritional value with fewer preservatives and other nasty chemicals than traditional kibble. Pets on raw diets often enjoy improved digestion, firmer stools, and shinier coats, thanks to the natural oils and nutrients found in raw food. Additionally, these pets typically have stronger teeth, fresher breath, and maintain leaner body compositions. The energy levels of pets on raw diets are often higher, leading to a more active lifestyle and better overall health outcomes.
Health outcomes
Comparative studies suggest that pets on raw diets show significant improvements in their microbiomes, this was a definite point made by all three vets during the summit. And, as we know, an improved microbiome means much better health for your pet.
Strategies for effective raw feeding
Sourcing ingredients
High-quality ingredients are paramount to successful raw feeding. Consider sourcing fresh meats from trusted suppliers or using reputable commercial raw food brands that adhere to regulatory standards (this in South Africa, is the Department of Agriculture – each food should have a V number). This ensures your pet receives the necessary nutrients without exposure to harmful substances.
Maintaining hygiene
Hygiene is crucial in raw feeding to prevent exposure to pathogens such as Salmonella and E. coli. Implement the following practices:
- Wash utensils and hands thoroughly after meal prep.
- Disinfect surfaces where raw food is prepared.
- Store raw food promptly and properly.
- Use commercially certified raw diets safe for human handling. (In fact, often, pet raw diets are SAFER for human handling than meat intended for human consumption.)
Effective meal planning and ingredient quality are foundational to maintaining your pet’s long-term health on a raw diet.
Conclusion
Raw feeding, when done properly, is a safe and beneficial dietary choice for pets. It transforms their nutrition by closely mirroring their natural diets, resulting in numerous health benefits such as improved digestion, healthier coats, and stronger teeth. However, it’s crucial to consult with professionals, adhere to safety practices, and follow a gradual transition to avoid digestive issues. By implementing knowledgeable and careful practices, pet owners can confidently consider raw feeding as a viable option for their pets.
