More than ever before, our dogs are suffering from allergies. Causes range from food allergies to allergic reactions to chemicals in the environment. Typical treatments are steroids (eg. Cortisone), antibiotics and antihistamines. Often, giving these drugs is an appropriate and necessary action.
But, in the words of Dr Robert Goldstein: “When the condition is treated with drugs, the immune system is suppressed and the toxin is prevented from leaving the body! Reliance on drugs alone over the long term is asking for a chronic, never-ending skin condition as well as other health problems.”
There are no simple answers, but allergies can be helped by:
- Feeding a better diet – fresh, varied food is best, or a high-quality, low-quantity protein food
- Washing frequently with natural, non-toxic shampoos
- Keeping dust levels down
- Switching to a ceramic feeding bowl, not plastic
- Supplementing with vitamins, minerals and certain herbs
Herbs and vitamins which have been shown to help with allergic conditions are:
- Vitamin C
- Bioflavonoids
- Echinacea
- Garlic
The Herbal Pet has combined all of these with a multivitamin base in their product, Allergy Formula.

I have a 6 year old 1.75kg Yorkie, who has developed an awful itchy red weepy rash over her whole body, except for her legs, I took her to my vet who gave her cortisone, which helped but made her pickup weight, she was always hungry. I’ve now had her on Allergy for 11 days, but she is still very red and itchy, should I increase her 1/4 teaspoon a day? P.S. I’ve also stopped giving her Hills and only feeding her chicken, rice and vegetables. PLEASE help. Many Thanks.
Hi Carol. Yes, you often need to give an increased amount in the beginning. You can safely give 4 times the recommended amount. Good luck.
Your product looks fantastic. I’m originally from SA but now live in Canada can I purchase your allergy product here? I’m desperately looking to get it for my cat who has skin issues which is likely allergic dermatitis and she licks, scratches and bites terrible wounds. Steroids only suppressing her immune system and making problem worse plus now steroids have caused diabetes. Trying to treat naturally now. Thank you!
Hi Tanya. Yes, your cat has exactly the issues which this product helps. But unfortunately not available in Canada itself yet. We do send to Canada though, so order online if you’d like to try it. 🙂
Hi Samantha. Please do try our Allergy Formula – as you can see from the comments on this page, we have had a lot of success in getting dogs off cortisone.
Hi, i have an 8 year old jack Russell. Born in uk, moved her with me to SA 2yrs ago. Since being in sa she scratches bites and pulls her hair out in spring and summer. Gets aggressive
my other dog during that time. I know its because of her being so itchy. The vet keeps giving her cortisone injections which increases her aggressiveness so im wanting to try herbal. Can you recommend anything for me.
Samantha, most definitely try Allergy Formula.
This product sounds just what I need as my dog, keeps biting and scratching herself red raw. Only problem is……I live in the UK. Can I get it here? I have bought a product called ‘Pet Remedy’ a diffuser to help with separation anxiety and depression, which is working wonders, but I’m needing something to help with the biting and scratching. Can you help or let me know of an alternative that I could use? Or even, do you ship to the UK?
Debbie, I’ve replied to you on email. 🙂
We have an almost 8 month old boxer ( white ) he had reacted to dog food and his patches are filling in but I can’t even brush him right without those spots being irritated now. I’m at the the point where I’ll try anything! Do u think the allergy formula might possibly help get him looking normal again ( no thin patches ). Thank you
Benita, the Allergy Formula really is worth a try. It helps a lot, especially with these skin problems…
We have a mini dachshund with severe allergies and only cortisone helps. What do you suggest?
Margaret, please do try the Allergy Formula. It doesn’t work 100% of the time (but close), but it is definitely worth a try if you are looking at a lifetime of cortisone.
I am interested in how this works. Please could you cite scientific research to support your claims of efficacy for these products, specifically “Allergy Formula”.
Phil, I unfortunately can’t give you my references without giving away my formulation. But I’d love to send you a sample to try, then you could see for yourself. Email me your postal address then I’ll send it off.
