Your dog or cat’s gut is home to trillions of bacteria that do far more than digest food, they shape immunity, mood, and overall health. Probiotics can genuinely help, especially when your pet is stressed, but most commercial products simply don’t contain enough live bacteria to make a real difference. Probiotics are the go-to fix for a pet’s gut problems

I get why probiotics are the first thing people reach for. The idea makes intuitive sense, gut out of balance, pop in some good bacteria, job done. The supplement aisle has been selling that story for years, and plenty of vets have gone along with it. But the honest truth is the evidence doesn’t back it up as cleanly as the marketing would have you believe, and I think pet owners deserve better than that.

So what does the research actually show? A review published in the AVMA journal back in 2017 concluded, and these are essentially their words, that it’s impossible to draw firm conclusions about whether probiotics work in dogs and cats. The studies are too small, too poorly designed, and don’t account for what the animals were eating or where they were living. For everyday tummy upsets and conditions like chronic Giardia infection, the evidence is genuinely thin. Where probiotics do show a real signal is in stressed dogs, think kennels and shelters, which is quite a specific situation, not a reason to give them to every pet with a dodgy stomach.

There’s also a product quality issue that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough. When researchers have tested commercial pet foods and supplements that claim to contain probiotics, they’ve found bacterial counts ranging from zero to 1.8 × 10⁵ CFU per gram. Human probiotic research tends to use doses of 1 × 10¹⁰ to 1 × 10¹¹ CFU per day. That’s a staggering difference. And we don’t even have good data yet on what the right therapeutic dose actually is for dogs and cats. A lot of what’s on the shelf simply isn’t delivering what it promises.

Here’s the bit that surprises most people: probiotics don’t actually move in permanently. Research confirms they don’t set up home in the gut, they pass straight through. Any benefit they offer comes from the by-products they produce on the way through, not from colonising anything. That’s a very different picture from “repopulating your pet’s gut,” which is how almost every probiotic product is marketed.

My own preference, and I’ve thought this for a long time, is to work with the bacteria that are already living in your pet’s gut rather than trying to introduce new ones. A good prebiotic, like fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) or inulin, feeds the beneficial bacteria that are already there, encourages the production of short-chain fatty acids that literally fuel the gut lining, and shifts the balance of the bacterial community in a real, measurable way. The research on synbiotics, that’s a prebiotic and probiotic used together, does look more promising. One randomised, placebo-controlled trial in shelter dogs found that only 7.7% of dogs given a synbiotic had diarrhoea lasting two or more days, compared to 20.7% in the placebo group. But notice it’s the combination that works, the prebiotic is doing important work there. If you’re going to use a probiotic, pair it with a prebiotic. Or better still, start with the prebiotic and build from there.

How prebiotics and probiotics act on your pet’s gut

Your pet’s gut microbiome does a lot more than help digest dinner. In cats and dogs, it shapes immune function, energy use, resistance to pathogens, and even mood and behaviour through the gut-brain connection [15].

Probiotics work in a way that surprises most people: they don’t actually move in and set up home in your pet’s gut. What happens instead is that as they pass through, they produce metabolites, useful compounds that temporarily shift the gut environment and ease symptoms [4]. That’s why dose matters so much. Pet foods that claim to contain probiotics have been measured at somewhere between 0 and 1.8 × 10⁵ CFU per gram. The studies that actually show results in humans use doses of 1 × 10¹⁰ to 10¹¹ CFU per day [3]. That’s a vast difference, and the right therapeutic dose for dogs and cats hasn’t been properly worked out yet [3].

When those bacteria ferment prebiotics, they produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), specifically acetate, propionate, and butyrate, which act as fuel for the cells lining the gut, help keep the gut wall intact, and reduce inflammation [9]. Dogs with chronic gut problems have been found to have significantly lower SCFA levels than healthy dogs, which tells us just how central this pathway is [13]. Prebiotics also help shift the bacterial community in a more beneficial direction and improve how well the gut absorbs minerals [7]. Dose matters here too, around 3% prebiotic inclusion in the diet produces noticeable changes in bacterial populations, whereas lower amounts have little effect [6]. The type of fibre you choose matters as well: cereal-based fibres, especially those containing beet pulp, tend to support beneficial genera like Bifidobacterium and the butyrate-producing Fecalibacterium, and they help increase the overall variety of gut bacteria [12].

Red ginseng-derived dietary fibre is worth a mention here. In a double-blind, randomised trial in dogs, it acted as a prebiotic, boosting microbiota diversity, encouraging short-chain fatty acid-producing microbes, reducing potentially harmful bacteria, and making the microbial community more complex and resilient, all in a dose-dependent way [8].

And it’s not just traditional fibres that can support the microbiome. Natural plant compounds, including bromelain, quercetin, and Lentinula edodes (shiitake mushroom), have been shown to encourage the growth of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus in healthy dogs without upsetting the wider microbial balance, working through mechanisms similar to prebiotics [14].
