Natural dewormers for dogs work, but only if you pick the right ones

Pumpkin seeds have genuine in vivo evidence behind them; most other “natural” options are still waiting for it, and that distinction matters for your dog.

Some natural remedies do show genuine anthelmintic activity against dog parasites, but the evidence is uneven. I understand why people believe this. “Natural” carries an implicit promise of harmlessness, and when you’re trying to avoid the side effects of conventional drugs, herbal alternatives feel like a safe harbour. The industry does very little to correct this impression.

Here’s what the research actually shows, and it’s more complicated.

The evidence base for most herbal anthelmintics is thin and largely confined to laboratory dishes. A 2023 review found that 70% of studies on plant-based antiparasitics are conducted in vitro only, meaning they never leave the test tube and progress to trials in living animals. Where in vivo studies do exist, the results are often sobering: thyme essential oil, for example, showed strong activity against multiple parasite life stages in vitro but was entirely ineffective at reducing egg production in infected animals in vivo. That gap between a promising lab result and a working treatment in your dog matters enormously.

The remedies that do have credible in vivo evidence, pumpkin seed (Cucurbita pepo) being the strongest candidate in this category, are dose-dependent. The effective doses demonstrated in animal studies are not trivial: in swine, therapeutic doses of powdered C. pepo seed ran to 500 mg/kg/day for ten consecutive days; in rodent models, doses ranged from 200 mg/kg up to 7,600 mg/kg depending on the study. Cucurbitin, the active non-proteic amino acid responsible for paralysing worm musculature, needs to reach meaningful concentrations to do its job. A casual sprinkle won’t cut it.

Garlic (Allium sativum) is the starkest example of “natural ≠ inherently safe.” Toxicity in dogs is documented at 5 g/kg body weight of fresh garlic given daily for seven days, a dose that produces measurable haematological changes including Heinz body formation and reduced haemoglobin. Concentrated forms such as dehydrated flakes or powders are 3-5 times more potent than the fresh bulb, making them disproportionately risky. The margin between a potentially useful antiparasitic dose and a harmful one is narrow enough that I would never recommend garlic without proper weight-adjusted dosing and monitoring.

The honest position is this: some plant-based options have genuine, evidence-supported anthelmintic activity, but they are not automatically safe at any dose, and most haven’t been validated in clinical trials in dogs. Use them with the same respect you’d give a conventional drug, dose accurately, watch for reactions, and involve your vet, particularly if your dog has a confirmed worm burden that needs clearing.

How the active ingredients work against worms

The mechanisms here vary by ingredient, and I’ll only tell you what the research actually shows.

Pumpkin seeds (Cucurbita pepo) contain cucurbitin, a non-proteic amino acid (chemically, 3-amino-3-carboxypyrrolidine) that is the seed’s primary active compound against tapeworms. Efficacy is dose-dependent: the ethanol extract produced the strongest egg-count reductions in mouse models of *Heligmosoides bakeri* infection at higher doses.

**Garlic (*Allium sativum*) contains organosulfur compounds, including thiosulfates and diallyl derivatives**. It is worth being direct here: the research on garlic’s antiparasitic mechanism in dogs is not what the mechanism literature describes. What *is* well-documented is that these same organosulfur compounds cause oxidative damage to erythrocyte membranes and haemoglobin, which is the basis of garlic’s toxicity in dogs at high doses, not its antiparasitic action. In sheep, garlic powder at 50 g/kg of diet reduced faecal egg counts and improved growth performance in animals infected with gastrointestinal nematodes, but the specific biochemical mechanism driving that effect is not described in the available research.

Diatomaceous earth (food-grade, non-calcined) is assessed as safe for animal consumption by the European Food Safety Authority at up to 5,000 mg/kg of complete feed, but the research is clear that its efficacy as an internal anthelmintic remains unclear. I won’t claim a mechanism for it that the evidence doesn’t support.

How to use natural dewormers for dogs: what the evidence actually supports

Pumpkin seed (Cucurbita pepo), the best-evidenced option

Pumpkin seed is the only natural dewormer in this category with meaningful in vivo data behind it. Its active compound, cucurbitin (3-amino-3-carboxypyrrolidine), paralyses worm musculature, causing the parasite to detach from the intestinal wall and be expelled, a mechanism confirmed in tapeworm research. Separate studies have demonstrated significant reductions in intestinal roundworm burden and Trichinella expulsion via a ‘weep and sweep’ intestinal response.

*Dosing:* The in vivo swine study that confirmed efficacy used powdered seed at 500 mg/kg body weight per day for 10 consecutive days. The same research collates therapeutic dose ranges across species: in humans, 100-1000 mg/kg/day has been investigated. No peer-reviewed dog-specific therapeutic dose has been established in the research pool, so I won’t pretend one exists. What the data does support is that efficacy is dose-dependent, low doses are unlikely to be sufficient.

*Duration:* The 10-consecutive-day protocol is the only treatment course with documented in vivo efficacy data (swine model). Whether a shorter course is effective in dogs has not been established in the pool.

*Side effects:* Pumpkin seed is generally considered safe and non-toxic, with toxicity reports being scarce. The reported adverse effects are oral allergic reactions, nausea, diarrhoea, and pruritus.

When natural options are not enough

Conventional anthelmintics are not the villain here. Fenbendazole at 50 mg/kg/day for 3 days maintains 98-100% efficacy against canine roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms, and remains a sound choice. Resistance to conventional drugs is emerging in dogs, particularly multi-drug-resistant Ancylostoma caninum, but it is currently less widespread than in livestock or horses. Natural dewormers and conventional treatment are not mutually exclusive, and in a confirmed heavy infection, combining approaches under veterinary supervision is a legitimate strategy.

A word on the evidence gap

Roughly 70% of herbal anthelmintic studies are in vitro only. The leap from a laboratory petri dish to a living dog’s gastrointestinal tract is significant, thyme essential oil, for instance, showed strong in vitro activity but failed to reduce egg counts in infected animals in vivo. Before using any botanical dewormer as a sole treatment in a symptomatic dog, get a faecal egg count done. It is the only way to know whether it is working.
